COSTS
Does the Bayreuth Summer University award grants?
The Bayreuth Summer University does not award grants. It is however possible to apply for a grant with DAAD or BAYHOST. With regard to the benefits and requirements please go directly to www.daad.de or www.bayhost.de . We will gladly assist you if you have any questions relating to grants.
How much spending money do I need during my stay in Bayreuth?
From experience we know you need around 7 € for food per day. Depending on which sights and museums you visit, expect to spend approx. 5 € per week. City trips are around 20 € and are booked together with the registration at the beginning.
COURSES
How is the level of the course that I attend assessed?
There is an assessment test at the beginning of the summer university. According to the test result, you will be allocated to a course best suited to your level of language competence.
Attending the specialised courses requires medium level (B2) or higher.
How many students attend one course?
To ensure an ideal learning environment, one course comprises 14 participants at the most.
Can I receive ECTS points for the course?
Yes, if you regularly attend the course and successfully pass a written exam at the end of the course. For a detailed allocation of the ECTS points go to Report | Credits. After successfully passing the exam, every participant will receive a certificate documenting the number of ECTS points achieved.
Can I take the TestDaF or DSH Exam within the scope of the Summer University?
You can take the TestDaF exam within the scope of the September courses. The DSH exam is scheduled a little later, in October, after the summer university. We prepare you for both exams. For further information regarding this topic click TestDaF|DSH Exam Preparation.
ACCOMMODATION
Do I need to find my own accommodation?
No, we will organise your accommodation for you. We can arrange a single room in a student dormitory or in a private shared flat. The rooms are 250 € per month plus 50 € deposit. We will return the deposit at the end of the course upon leaving the room clean and in its good condition.
Do I need to bring my own bedding?
Bedding is available in the private shared flats. The student dormitories do not provide bedding. Please bring bedding yourself. You may borrow cutlery at a reasonable price.
Do I need to bring my own towels?
Yes, you will need to take your own towels.
Is it possible to cook in the student dormitories?
A kitchen where you can cook is available in all student dormitories and private shared flats.
May I share accommodation with my friend?
It is more interesting to live together with young people from other countries. We can however arrange for you to be near your friends.
How far is it from the student dormitory to the university?
The student dormitories are located next to the campus and are close to the city centre. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the city centre. You may also take the bus, which roughly takes the same time.
FOOD
How much is a meal in the university dining hall?
Ca. 1.50 - 3.50 € + beverage.
Is there a special menu for vegetarians in the dining hall?
Yes, the daily menu always contains a vegetarian option. You may also choose from a variety of different salads at the salad buffet.
Does the university dining hall also offer evening meals?
No, the dining hall closes at 2 pm.
Does the university dining hall offer breakfast?
The university cafeteria offers coffee, tea and pastries.
GENERAL QUESTIONS
Where are the students of the summer courses from?
Countries of origin are almost all European countries, America, Australia, Africa and Asia. Students from 53 nations participated in 2010.
What age are the summer university attendees?
The majority of students are between 19 and 30 years of age. The participants need to be between 18 and 35 (exceptions on request).
Are there any sport activities during the free time?
Yes, sports feature within the summer university social programme. If you wish to play tennis, you need to bring your own tennis shoes! An outdoor swimming pool is located right next to the campus.
Where can I read my emails and surf the internet?
There are several computer rooms on campus. You will receive a password on the first day of your course, enabling you to use the university computers. If you have your own notebook and a LAN cable, you may also use the internet within the student dormitory.
Who do I contact for questions?
You will be supported by student tutors in the dormitories as well as during your time at university. The course office team will also gladly answer your questions.
