TestDaF and DSH

If you would like to study in Germany, you need to have sufficient German knowledge in order to be admitted to university. Competence may be demonstrated through the language exams TestDaF or DSH.

The IIK Bayreuth is a licensed TestDaF Institute and holds this exam two times per year (for dates see to the right).

The DSH exam is conducted twice a year at the University of Bayreuth.

TestDaF

The test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF, "German as a foreign language") is a language exam for all of those who already have good knowledge of German (upper level / C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

The TestDaF is accepted as a language certificate by the German universities, if you reach at least level C1 in all exam parts. The following competences are tested:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Listening comprehension
  • Written expression
  • Oral expression

The IIK Bayreuth is an official TestDaF Centre and offers TestDaF several times per year.

The next date is on Thursday, February 9th 2012.

Please find more information regarding the TestDaF here.

DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber, "German Language Examination for University Admission for Foreign Applicants")

The DSH is a language exam of the universities in Germany. It is developed and conducted by the individual universities.

It tests whether your German is good enough to study at a German university (i.e. comprehending lectures and study-related texts, to express oneself in writing and orally with regard to a study-related topic).

The DSH consists of a written and oral exam part, whereby the written exam takes 4 hours at the most and the oral exam a maximum of 20 minutes.

According to the examination regulations, the written exam comprises the following range of issues:

  • Comprehension and processing of a listening exercise
  • Text production based on assigned material
  • Comprehension and processing of a reading exercise
  • Comprehension and processing of academic structures

You are permitted to use a single-language German dictionary.

The oral exam comprises an exam conversation, where general as well as questions relating to the chosen study are discussed.

The requirement for participating in the DSH of Bayreuth University is admission to a course at Bayreuth University, or participation in a semester-accompanying German course at the IIK Bayreuth.

If failed, the DSH may only be re-sat once. If failed twice, the admission for the course is also forfeited.

The DSH is conducted twice a year, prior to the beginning of the semesters in March/April and in early October respectively. For studying at Bayreuth University, it is conducted by the department German as a Foreign Language (Intercultural German Studies).

The next DSH takes place in April 12th / 13th 2012.

You can register for the exam through the department German as a Foreign Language (Intercultural German Studies) at the University of Bayreuth or the IIK Bayreuth.

In connection with the department German as a Foreign Language (Intercultural German Studies) the IIK offers an intensive course to prepare you for the DSH. The course takes place in the IIK or within the scope of the Summer University for Intercultural German Studies.

Please register only when your knowledge of German reaches at least upper level or C1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference). If you are not sure whether your level of German is sufficient, please take advice at the IIK prior to the course registration.

If you have any questions, you can contact Ms Krull at IIK Bayreuth at any time.
